Garden Design Maine was initially contacted by a homeowner in the Village of Cornish, Maine, who wanted a consultation about what to do with the yard surrounding her historic home. She and her husband had already moved a gazebo from the back of the property to a more central location, removed several large black walnut trees from the front yard, and were working to establish new turf grass.
With so many pieces in motion, the homeowner felt overwhelmed about how to create a cohesive, well-designed cottage garden around the gazebo. Fortunately, loam had been brought in to establish the lawn, creating excellent soil conditions for the new garden as well.
The cottage garden design focused on creating a beautiful, cohesive landscape that would:
Provide flowers from May through frost
Incorporate long-blooming, pollinator-attracting plants
Be drought tolerant once established
Remain relatively low maintenance
Screen part of the neighboring house from the gazebo
Incorporate a crabapple tree, inspired by one the homeowners had loved at their previous home
When Garden Design Maine began working with the homeowners, the yard was in transition. The gazebo had recently been relocated to the center of the property, while the large black walnut trees in the front yard had already been removed and replaced with fastigiate maples.
The homeowners were also working on establishing turf grass and planned to add a short fence to contain their dog. Rather than creating isolated planting areas, the goal was to bring all of these elements together into one intentional landscape.
Garden Design Concept
Garden Design Maine created a cottage-style perennial garden centered around the gazebo, using a combination of flowering shrubs, herbaceous perennials, ornamental grasses, and foliage plants.
The planting design was carefully selected for a long succession of blooms, beginning in spring and continuing through frost. Lavender, catmint, alliums, peonies, daisies, daylilies, bee balm, phlox, rudbeckia, yarrow, and other flowering perennials provide color and interest throughout the growing season.
Arborvitae were incorporated to screen a portion of the neighboring house from the gazebo, while a crabapple tree was included elsewhere in the yard as a special reminder of a beloved tree from the homeowners' previous property.
Seasonal Flowering Perennials
The plant palette was designed to keep something interesting in bloom throughout the growing season. Spring and early-summer interest begins with alliums, peonies, creeping phlox, and iris, followed by lavender, catmint, geranium, daylilies, bee balm, daisies, and penstemon.
As summer progresses, rudbeckia, yarrow, and other long-blooming perennials continue the display, while ornamental grasses such as Panicum and Pennisetum add movement and texture into late summer and fall.
Garden Features and Planting Highlights
Gazebo Garden
The area surrounding the gazebo became the focal point of the new landscape, with curving garden beds and a mix of shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses creating a lush cottage-garden setting.
Long-Blooming Perennial Planting
Lavender, catmint, geranium, daylilies, bee balm, daisies, rudbeckia, yarrow, and other perennials were selected to provide an extended season of flowers while supporting pollinators.
Neighbor Screening
Arborvitae were incorporated to partially screen the neighboring house from views of the gazebo, adding evergreen structure and privacy.
Crabapple Tree
A crabapple was included in another part of the property at the homeowners' request, recreating a garden feature they had especially enjoyed at their previous home.
Installation and Outcome
The garden was planted as a joint effort between Garden Design Maine and the homeowners. Just three months after installation, the garden had already filled in beautifully.
Rather than looking like a newly planted garden, it had the lush, established appearance of a garden in its second or even third year—a remarkable transformation in a single growing season
The planting palette includes flowering shrubs, long-blooming perennials, ornamental grasses, and foliage plants selected to provide seasonal interest, pollinator appeal, and a low-maintenance garden once established.
