This colorful front yard garden redesign in Gorham, Maine was created to transform an existing planting into a vibrant, low-maintenance garden designed to thrive in full sun.
The homeowners invited Garden Design Maine to help refresh their sunny garden bed and develop a planting plan that would remain attractive throughout the growing season. The existing garden included several healthy plants, including daylilies, a potentilla shrub, hosta, and bleeding hearts. While these plants were doing well, the overall design lacked cohesion and the homeowners wanted a brighter, more colorful garden that would be easy to maintain for years to come.
The new garden design focused on long-blooming perennials, thoughtful plant layering, and a cheerful color palette of pinks, purples, whites, and yellows. The homeowners also loved the idea of incorporating large rocks throughout the garden to add natural structure and visual interest.
The design for this sunny Gorham garden focused on creating a planting plan that would provide color, structure, and seasonal interest while remaining manageable for the homeowners. Key goals included:
Create a cohesive planting design for a full-sun garden bed
Use long-blooming perennials for extended seasonal color
Maintain lower plant heights near the front windows
Incorporate large natural stones into the garden layout
Select hardy, low-maintenance plants suited to Maine gardens
Design a vibrant color palette featuring pinks, purples, whites, and yellows
Before the redesign, the garden contained a mix of existing plants including daylilies, hosta, bleeding hearts, and a healthy potentilla shrub. While several of these plants were thriving, the garden lacked a clear planting structure and did not fully take advantage of the sunny growing conditions.
The homeowners wanted a garden that would feel more intentional and colorful, with plants chosen specifically for their ability to thrive in full sun while offering extended bloom periods and visual interest.
Another important design consideration was plant height. Because the garden sits directly in front of the home’s windows, the homeowners preferred a planting plan that would maintain lower heights near the house while still creating depth and layering within the garden bed.
To help the homeowners visualize different possibilities for the space, Garden Design Maine developed two planting concepts featuring sun-loving perennials and shrubs.
The first concept emphasized movement and texture by incorporating taller ornamental grasses and Russian sage toward the back of the planting bed.
In the middle layer, classic garden perennials such as daisies and pink daylilies would provide cheerful summer color. The front of the border featured lower-growing plants including catmint, gaura, salvia, and lavender. This combination would create a soft, informal planting style with plenty of pollinator-friendly blooms.
The second design option focused on a layered arrangement of flowering perennials anchored by shrubs for structure.
Hydrangeas were placed toward the back of the garden to provide large, showy summer blooms. Mid-height phlox and taller penstemon added vertical accents and vibrant color.
The front portion of the garden featured a mix of lower-growing perennials including veronica, catmint, compact ornamental grasses, coreopsis, and shorter varieties of penstemon. A low-growing groundcover, cerastium, was suggested as a potential filler plant to soften the edges of the planting.
The homeowners ultimately selected the second design option, opting to omit the cerastium groundcover. They were especially drawn to the striking contrast between the hot pink phlox and the crisp white hydrangea blooms.
The garden was installed in late summer of 2023. This project was a true collaboration between the homeowner and Garden Design Maine. The client assisted with moving large rocks and digging planting holes, while Garden Design Maine coordinated the overall layout and planting design.
The finished garden combines colorful perennials, attractive foliage, and natural stone elements to create a cheerful and welcoming landscape. The mix of plants provides blooms throughout much of the growing season while remaining easy to maintain.
Today the garden adds vibrant color and energy to this Gorham property while showcasing plant choices that perform beautifully in full sun conditions. The layered planting design ensures the garden will continue to mature and fill in over time, creating an increasingly lush and colorful landscape.
With a thoughtful mix of perennials, shrubs, and natural stone elements, this project demonstrates how a sunny garden can be both visually exciting and easy to care for.
The following plants were selected for their durability, long bloom periods, and ability to thrive in sunny Maine garden conditions.
