Garden Design Maine was brought on to assist a dedicated DIY homeowner in Sebago in transforming a challenging grassy hillside into a vibrant, multi-season garden. The project centered on designing a planting plan to flank a future stairway, combining beauty and function across a sloped landscape.
Careful plant selection was essential to ensure the garden could withstand Maine’s unpredictable winters, spring thaws, and varying light conditions.
Design Goals:
Create a visually appealing garden with four-season interest
Recommend hardy Zone 4 perennials and shrubs
Incorporate native plants to support local pollinators and ecosystem health
Design for varied light conditions across the hillside
Complement the planned stair installation with layered plantings on both sides
The hillside was primarily grass, offering little visual interest and presenting challenges due to slope, drainage, and inconsistent light exposure. The space required a thoughtful planting strategy to stabilize and enhance the area while working with its natural conditions.
The design focused on a layered planting approach, combining long-blooming perennials, structural shrubs, and native species selected for durability and ecological value.
Plants were chosen not only for seasonal color, but also for winter interest—featuring shrubs with colorful stems and strong forms that provide structure even in colder months.
A mix of resilient, long-blooming perennials was selected to provide continuous color and support pollinators throughout the growing season, while remaining hardy in Maine’s climate.
Layered plantings designed to flank a future stairway
Native and pollinator-friendly species for ecological benefit
Shrubs with winter interest for year-round structure
Plant selections suited to varied light conditions across the slope
While the homeowner took some creative liberties during installation, the finished garden successfully met all design goals. The result is a flourishing hillside landscape that reflects both thoughtful planning and the dedication of a passionate DIY gardener.
