Garden Design Maine recently helped a longtime client refresh their parents’ gravesite at Calvary Cemetery by transitioning from annuals to a low-maintenance perennial planting.

The original garden relied on seasonal annuals that struggled in full sun and inconsistent watering, often leaving the space looking sparse during the hottest months.

This gravesite garden focused on creating a meaningful, lasting planting that would remain beautiful with minimal care. Key goals included:

Photo taken the day of planting. The results were beautiful, and featured long-blooming lavender, catmint, and a variety of coneflower that only reaches ~ 15" tall. The customer was delighted!

Before the Garden Installation

Many gravesites in the cemetery, including this one, are exposed to full sun throughout the day. Existing plantings often consisted of annuals that required frequent watering and struggled to thrive in dry conditions.

Garden Design Concept

Working with the client’s desire to feature lavender tones in honor of their mother, the design centered on heat- and drought-tolerant perennials that could thrive with minimal intervention.

Lavender became a natural focal point, supported by complementary plants selected for their durability, compact size, and long bloom periods. A fresh layer of mulch helped retain moisture and complete the clean, simple design.
