Garden Design Maine recently helped a longtime client refresh their parents’ gravesite at Calvary Cemetery by transitioning from annuals to a low-maintenance perennial planting.
The original garden relied on seasonal annuals that struggled in full sun and inconsistent watering, often leaving the space looking sparse during the hottest months.
This gravesite garden focused on creating a meaningful, lasting planting that would remain beautiful with minimal care. Key goals included:
Replace short-lived annuals with hardy perennials
Select plants suited to hot, full-sun conditions
Minimize maintenance and watering needs
Incorporate the client’s requested color palette
Create a respectful, enduring tribute
Many gravesites in the cemetery, including this one, are exposed to full sun throughout the day. Existing plantings often consisted of annuals that required frequent watering and struggled to thrive in dry conditions.
Working with the client’s desire to feature lavender tones in honor of their mother, the design centered on heat- and drought-tolerant perennials that could thrive with minimal intervention.
Lavender became a natural focal point, supported by complementary plants selected for their durability, compact size, and long bloom periods. A fresh layer of mulch helped retain moisture and complete the clean, simple design.
Heat- and drought-tolerant perennials suited to cemetery conditions
A soft lavender color palette honoring the client’s loved one
Low-growing plant selections that maintain a neat appearance
Mulch layer for moisture retention and reduced maintenance
Garden Design Maine continues to care for the planting, providing occasional watering and seasonal attention. Over time, the garden has matured into a vibrant, enduring tribute that stands out within the cemetery landscape.
The following perennials were selected for their durability, long bloom time, and ability to thrive in full sun with minimal care in Maine landscapes.
