This small garden needed a fresh look. The space had previously held two shrubs struggling with aphids and scattered annuals, and the owner wanted bold, long‑blooming perennial color rather than pastels. They also hoped for a design that would be easy to care for and could grow richer over time.
Working with the site’s clay soil and partial sun conditions, Garden Design Maine developed a planting plan that would maximize vibrant color from summer through fall and perform well with minimal maintenance. At the center of the design we placed a hydrangea variety called ‘Little Lime Punch’, providing structure and striking foliage color throughout the season.
To support the owner’s desire for primary hues and seasonal interest, we selected a mix of perennials that thrive in just 4–5 hours of sunlight and tolerate clay soils with minor amendments. The planting palette included delphiniums, echinacea, rudbeckia, reblooming daylilies, phlox, iris, geum, heuchera, and bellflower, creating contrasting texture and sustained bloom.

Installed in May 2022, this garden was photographed in full bloom two months later and continues delivering beautiful color throughout Fall, proving that even a small garden can have big color and long‑lasting impact with thoughtful design and plant selection.
